The Eagle's Challenge Golf Tournament is in memory of

DOUGLAS D. MONROE, JR.

Doug's love for golf was obvious to all who knew him. His graceful swing was honed through spending countless hours on the dew covered tees of the Eagle's driving range. His humility honored the game and those he played with. While having played some of the best courses in the world, Doug's love for the Golden Eagle was unmatched. It was his home course, and the course was his home - his sanctuary.

Many knew of Doug's tremendous contributions that made the Northern Neck a welcoming home for all. From his roles in community banking to founding an elementary school, establishing a hospital and free clinic, and even aiding in the development of a senior living community, Doug consistently worked for the betterment of the region. However, few are aware of one of his proudest accomplishments - helping save the Golden Eagle from permanent closure.

In October 2018, the Tides Inn publicly announced that, like the Tartan and King Carter Courses before it, the Golden Eagle would close for good at the end of the season. Doug wasted no time in stepping up to secure the course for the community. Understanding the power of collective action, he rallied support and spearheaded efforts to explore preservation options. Collaborating tirelessly with Tides Inn management and community leaders, Doug's vision and leadership were crucial in forming the LLC that enabled the community to step forward and secure the future of the Golden Eagle Golf Club.

Now, it is time for us to carry on Doug's work. The Eagle's Challenge offers a opportunity for us to help restore the Eagle to its former glory.
